“Passionate about life and using my creativity in every aspect of it. Diversity to me is about our uniqueness but also our shared commonalities.”
Chavah Kinloch is a contemporary mixed media artist, born in Western Samoa, raised in Auckland and now living in Southland. She says, "It is my desire to let out the images that flood my mind. I’m a visual person which can sometimes be daunting as I’m attracted to all things colourful. Like a magpie I zoom in on anything that’s bright or shines. My mind will wonder and images of combined colours and random objects plague me until I unleash the image on paper or canvas.
While I love that this is the way I create, the process can be exhausting leaving me sleepless for days until I’ve made the effort to share my views with the world. Allowing these thoughts and feelings to free-flow is how I work. My translations are colourful and contemporary. I consider my work a celebration of dreams and life.
For the majority of my art career I have done what I felt was expected of me. I’ve produced work that was 'viewer friendly’ and created a great career for myself. I’ve held in my mind the memories of my life experiences and created from them works of art that are positive and encouraging. I am now seeking the opportunity to share the art I am currently creating that is drawn from those memories in a raw form, with no disregard to my own point of view."
“My concept for the theme of diversity is to explore my own life path and present it to viewers in a way that will get them to ask questions of themselves. I believe I have experienced many of the taboo issues that surround us in society that are all too often dismissed or ignored or portrayed in a victimising way. I would like for people to consider what type of role they play in the scheme of things.
This piece is of an abandoned teenage girl in a blindfold reaching into the darkness, trying to find her way asking: “Where are you?” "
